So you want to become a better person but you don’t know where to start?

I don’t know about you, but I get tired of reading the mountain of articles that are dedicated to “improving” your life.  Some are good, but most websites contain a million of the same articles for you to sift through.  If you go to a website like lifehack or buzzfeed, the majority of the articles overlap.  Their platform is designed around how much content they can produce. So, it incentivizes the same topics to be written more than once just so that they can churn out content.  This is extremely frustrating and really a waste of time. And time is something you will never get back.  Probably just like you, I was frustrated and confused by the overload of information which lead me to constantly wonder “where do I start?” or “am I on the right track?” or “is this really the best information out there”.   There was not a resource that pooled together valuable resources in a nice and concise way.  Right now, this outline is a rough personal development plan from my years of learning, reading, attending courses, and experimenting. I thought I’d share what I’ve learned so that it might help some people out.

So Why haven’t you started changing your life?

You need to ask yourself the above question.  Some possible answers are below.

  • Your Ego – You are scared to confront yourself and your failures in life and acknowledge that you could do a better job. You tend to run away from your own shadow.
  • You are a “perfectionist”  –  Ironically, you waste so much time researching a topic perfectly that you hardly ever take action.
  • You play the victim – Instead of taking responsibility for your actions, you hide behind a facade of excuses.  You have no control over your life because it’s always someone else’s fault.
  • You have an entitled attitude – You feel that you deserve something without working for it.  It’s sad that nowadays we celebrate and encourage that “everyone must get a trophy.”

 

So then, What is Personal Development ?

It is simply the process and mindset of realizing you can do something better and taking action to make it better. It’s really that simple.  And no.  It’s not a bunch of “just think positive” and “pretend to be happy”.

Outline

Choose a Mentor – Nobody successful ever made it on their own. Having a mentor allows you to model after their successes.

Get Motivated – People have issues in achieving their goals and aspirations because they lack motivation and follow through.  Don’t get stuck.

Stay Focused – This is a vital component of any ambition you have.  I’ll briefly go over all the tips, tricks, and things I’ve used to stay focused.

Foundation  – In order to make lasting change in your life, you have to be able to identify problems and their sources effectively.  To do this you must develop an awareness of yourself and your surroundings.  Everything you do stems from your beliefs.  What are your beliefs? Do you know what makes you tick, how you react, how you think?

Frameworks & Mindsets – A framework is a way or process for you to think in to efficiently conquer.  Think of it as installing a new operating system for your brain.

Building Successful Habits – Habits are the cornerstone of what makes you who you are.  If you want to succeed, you need the right habits.

Building Successful Skills – Learn successful skills make you a more effective person.  Learn how to read faster, memorize anything, build confidence, learn a new language, and much more.

Social Skills – Learn the essential skills for social situations,  how to influence people, how to make friends, how to be a likable person, and growing relationships.

Health – I’ll go over all the health issues & questions I’ve encountered myself.

Wealth – There is a ton of misinformation out in the world.  Get important ideas and insights on wealth that I’ve encountered.

Choose a Mentor

Name a successful person, and there will be a mentor behind him/her.  The great thing is that mentors come in all shapes and sizes.  Mentors play a huge role in accelerating your learning. The best mentors are ones you can interact with, however, books and courses are other ways to learn from a mentor.  Years of experience and advice can be yours.

If you have an area of expertise you are getting into like weight lifting, Engineering, or dentistry, then you need to go seek out the best mentors and model after their successes.

Become Motivated

Know how and what motivates you – You have to know what motivates you as a person. Does certain music motivate you? Maybe you setup incentives for yourself?  Do you revel in stepping back and seeing a finished project and admiring it? Helping other people?  Being creative?  Doing the right and moral thing? Maybe you want to impress a special someone with a skill.

Why in the heck is this important?  If you know what motivates you, you can use this to drive you to get things done. Let’s say you are trying to get something done that you don’t want to do.  Look at the activity in ways that motivates you.  If helping others motivates you, look at how completing the task helps others or could potentially help others.  If you can’t think of anything then you’re not being creative enough.

Understand why you are wanting to improve yourself –  Before you start on your journey of personal development, you have to know what you want to improve.  But it’s not just that. The most important thing is to WHY are you improving?  If it’s to please someone else, that may work for a bit, but it will never have a lasting effect.

Develop Vision – This part is very important.  It takes willpower to initially get started.  You have to PUSH yourself.  However, this type of motivation won’t last forever.  You need to develop a vision and let this vision pull you.

The Foundation – Understanding Yourself and the World

It might seem simple, but one of THE MOST DIFFICULT and most important things in life is understanding yourself and how your mind operates.  We float on in life looking at it through a unique lens that we develop from our experiences and hardships in life.  Your lens, viewpoint, or “paradigm” directly impacts your decisions, your beliefs, and your feelings. It literally affects everything.

Think about it this way… if you don’t know how your mind works, then how will you be able to take control of your life?

Know how your beliefs, thoughts, and habits interact in your life

Shift your Paradigm –  We act and understand things from a specific viewpoint that is different from everyone else.  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is the book I learned this principle from & it is required reading.  There are multiple ways of looking at things, and not everything is black and white all the time. You might understand this but I bet you don’t actually practice implementing it into your day to day thinking.  We should always try to look at things from different angles and anticipate unknown information that may change our beliefs.

Know Yourself – In other words, understand why you do what you do.  What makes you tick?  It might sound basic, but have you really spent the time to analyze why you were upset the other day? Why didn’t you make that important call today?  Or why you didn’t talk to that hottie in the elevator?  If you understand how you work, you are able to start taking control, identifying, and changing your beliefs and your actions.

Tony Robbins main mission is to make you understand “why you do what you do” and giving you the right tools and mindsets to start making changes in your life.  I highly recommend reading his book “Unlimited Power” or better yet if you have the money, his Personal Power II course is amazing.  You can listen to it in the car or while mowing the lawn and you get to hear his voice which makes it a lot more impacting. I really think everyone should be MADE to listen to this, because his program literally is life changing.  If you are not a Tony Robbins fan, you should definitely try it out.  I bet you will be one afterwards.

A few basic but important points that Tony Robbins accentuates:

  • Pleasure & Pain – We make choices based on two factors and two factors only.  We make a choice because it moves us towards pleasure or moves us away from pain.
  • The Power of Associations – In life, we make associations with things.  Some of those associations and beliefs are wrong or unecessary.  A fundamental part of making any change is changing our associations of the action or thing we want to change.
    • EXAMPLE –  Let’s say you are overweight.  Your diet consists of eating a bunch of junk food and sweets and not exercising enough.  You make this choice because this brings you pleasure.  This type of pleasure is instant and easy.  However, this activity (pleasurable) also causes a lot of pain down the road.  You gain weight, your health declines, you lose self confidence, your girlfriend/boyfriend breaks up with you.  You have a constant battle now between eating unhealthy food (pleasure) and gaining weight (pain). Most people stay in the cycle of unhealthy eating because the pleasure from it is instant – it’s easy – they take the path of least resistance.  IN ORDER TO CHANGE, you need to associate MORE PAIN from the unhealthy eating and absent of exercise vs the pleasure it produces.  Every time you eat unhealthy food, make a habit of obsessively visualizing and recalling the pain that it has caused you.  Think about and visualize the pain that it will produce if you don’t change, the diseases and health issues that will eventually occur.  If you don’t change, the pain you’ve experienced or imagine is just not enough.
    • ASK GOOD QUALITY QUESTIONS –  Does my body control what I do?  Or do I control what I do? Do I need to eat this right now? Do I not care about my body?  Do I not care about my partner and what he thinks?  My kids could potentially be fatherless or motherless, do I care more about my eating than them?

Pause, Reflect, and Become More Self Aware – Are you finding yourself running into the same problems or issues?  You are always having bad luck? Are you always getting involved in horrible relationships?  It’s time to stop pointing the finger and heed the feedback.  I’m sure that a lot of these things are caused by you.  Ask yourself “Is there anything you could have done differently to avoid the issue or problem?” [How to self reflect & analyze yourself]

Write Down your Strengths and Weaknesses – Keep an open notebook and write down your strengths and weaknesses in all aspects of your life – Social, Wealth, Motivation, Habits, etc.  This will help you become more aware of yourself.  Don’t worry if you can’t think of very many at first, just keep it open.  Keeping it open or keeping a list on the wall or fridge will help cue your mind. When you think of one, write it down.

Define Your Desires, Wants, and Direction in Life –  Write a paragraph of what you want out of life and what you’re all about.  The more concise you are the better.

Study Your Beliefs – SMASH Self Limiting Beliefs & Adopt new ones – Your beliefs are the core to everything you do from your actions, habits and attitudes.  Don’t entertain and keep beliefs that limit you as a person. Make a list of all your beliefs in life (Social, Work, Wealth, Health etc). Also look at your fears and your beliefs tied to them. Note your limiting and negative beliefs.  You can’t just “delete” a belief.  You have to replace the belief with a different belief. Challenge yourself to look at it from different eyes.  A great way of getting your brain to work is “How would (Your Role Model’s Name) think like?  How would he/she think differently about this belief.

Develop Boundaries – Boundaries are developed by beliefs and values.  Most problems in life result in not be able to define AND protect your boundaries.  Decide what you will do and what you won’t do.  Define what is acceptable and what is not. Define what boundaries you have leniency and which ones are black and white.  If someone crosses your boundary.

Understand the 25 Cognitive Biases – Do you know that you are being manipulated every single day?  You are bombarded with TV ads, the radio, and other people you come into contact.  You are being influenced in every direction. Don’t let other’s control you without you knowing.  There are 25 Cognitive biases we must learn so that we can become aware of manipulators!  This also works the other way, if you want to sell or persuade someone, using these cognitive biases are key

Your Health is your #1 Priority

Face it, without your health, you’d be dead, and everything you worked for would be meaningless.  It’s up to you to take care of yourself. Your physical health directly affects how you feel, your hormones, your decisions and how well you think.

We have a problem. The medical model we have in the U.S. is severely lacking in a lot of areas.  It seems like everything is solved by a pill that you must take for the rest of your life.  I’m sorry, this is not medicine.  Most conventional doctors just cover up symptoms and they do not treat the root cause.  This  is not health. This is a business model designed to extract as much money from you before you die.  Now, am I totally anti-pill? No, of course not, but if you’re taking them for the rest of your life, there’s a definite problem with that.

People I love have been directly affected by diseases and health problems.  My sister had cancer (classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), my dad has cancer (Prostate). My mother has a plethora of health issues from bipolar, diabetes, Lyme disease, adrenal fatigue, thyroid disease, and also diagnosed with manic depression. Sheesh. This was a wakeup call for me to start taking my health seriously and also learn things to help my family out by researching everything and anything.

The point is, you are the only one responsible for your health.  No one will care more about your health than you.  It is not your family.  It is not your doctor. It is you.  You say you’re “too busy”.  If health is not a priority to you, I ask you to rethink that.

Why is it that 2/3 of Americans are overweight?  Even if you are not overweight, that doesn’t make you healthy either.  People are getting sicker and sicker with the use of GMOs, fluoridation, toxic chemicals in our food.

Here are the most important topics you need to look at in my opinion

Change your diet – This is obvious, but a lot of people STILL think they are buying healthy food and they are not! I’m sure you’ve heard this before but it’s so important. Focus on whole foods, avoid GMOs, avoid fast food, eating more vegetables, stay away from highly processed foods even if they say “NATURAL” or “HEALTHY”. Stay away from food additives, start drinking more water – (NOT TAP water).

  • Become a Label Reader – Get into the habit of reading labels at the grocery store and knowing what’s bad and what is not.
  • Avoid Toxic Foods – MSG, aspartame, and GMOs. Stay away from food additives and chemicals
  • Get on a green drink – The best green drink that I’ve come across is called Green Vibrance. I’ve tried all kinds. Superfoods.
  • Get into blending
  • Go on the GAPS diet – If you have a health problem you can’t tackle, try the GAPs diet, a popular type of food elimination diet developed by doctors in the 1940s to treat autoimmune disorders. If you suspect that the food you are eating it causing health issues, this is the best diet to get on.
  • Focus on Digestion – It’s false when they say, “You are what you eat”. Actually, you are what you digest.

  • Make it easy to Exercise – Set up a home gym or sign up for a gym membership closest to your home.
  • Get a work out partner – This is great for keeping you accountable.
  • Find a sport – Make working out fun. It’s more incentive for you.
  • Weight Training –  A lot of people don’t weight train, especially women. Why do it? Simply because it naturally boosts your hormone levels needed for healthy.

Wealth & Making Money

The US Economy – As you know, our economy is not doing so well.  We are $19 Trillion in debt. We keep printing money out of “thin air” aka quantitative easing which devalues are currency.  We can barely pay off the interest on the huge debt that we own.

Don’t Get into the Stock Market –  It’s too risky given our current state.I use to day trade small cap stocks with a $30k account for about a year.  I went up and down in my account.  Overall I made $10k, lost $20k… net loss of $10k and then I cut out.  I was signed up to Tim Sykes program. IF you decide to get into the stock market:  Only get in after it crashes.  Those are the best opportunities.  Many people try to get in the middle or end of a bull cycle based on hype.

Use Gold and Silver as a Hedge: A hedge is a sort of safety net in case something fails.  Gold and silver are great ways to store and protect value.
